1954 - 1964? Elvis - The Early Years

We all have a view on when Elvis's early years finished. Personally I think it was around 1964. Of course, his true early Rock n Roll years were much earlier, but 64 saw the song - "Ain't That Loving You Baby" and "Such A Night" - Both great Rock n Roll tunes.

Elvis became famous with "That's Alright Mama" - I love this song and so did Elvis, he even took it with him into his 1970's shows - That's exactly where I like to put it too.

The 3 songs he sang on The Louisana Hayride tour which started off Elvis's career were

That's Alright Mama - Baby Let's Play House and Blue Moon of Kentucky.

These songs are pure Rock n Roll and Elvis in his very early days.

My favourite early song was 1956 - Don't Be Cruel

1956 - 1969 Elvis - The Movie Years

1956 saw Love Me Tender released. Elvis's first film was a huge success and paved the way for 31 films taking him through to his last film - Change Of Habit in 1969.

Elvis wanted to be more of a serious actor - His icon was James Dean and was often heard saying that he wanted to be like him. There was even serious talks of him starring alongside Barbara Streisand in "A Star Is Born" - Seems like the Colonel wanted too much money and the contract still lays dormant in the vaults of Graceland.

My Favourite film was GI Blues and I like to include a few of the films songs in my show.

It is said that GI Blues was the cookie cutter film that all future films were based on -

1970's Elvis - Las Vegas Years

Actually it was 1969 that saw Elvis sign with the International Hotel in Vegas. This era is considered his 70's Vegas years - Where jumpsuit, boots and big hair was his trademark.

His voice matured again and his influences became stars such as Roy Orbison, Tom Jones and even Olivia Newton John.

The jumpsuit I'm wearing here is a replica from his 1969 and 1970 shows and was made by Elvis's own tailors - B&K Enterprises.

Even though I grew up with Elvis because of my Mother and Brothers love for him, I always preferred his earlier music and it wasn't until a few years ago when I started attending the brilliant Harbor Lights Elvis Festival in Bristol that a new world of Elvis was opened for me.

Elvis loved to sing songs he liked from other performers in his stage show. Songs like Sweet Caroline, Runaway and Let Me Be There by Olivia Newton John were just some of them.

I absolutely love this part of my show and hope you will too.
